SD card, cloud, internal memory: where do your Android files really go?

On Android, finding a file can quickly become confusing. A photo appears in the gallery but is nowhere to be found elsewhere. A downloaded document seems to disappear. A video takes up space without us knowing exactly where. This confusion rarely comes from a bug. It is related to how Android distributes files between internal memory, the SD card, and online services.

Why does Android store your files in multiple places without notifying you?

Android does not place all files in the same location by default. The system distributes data according to their type, the application used, and the settings enabled. A photo taken with the camera is not treated like a document downloaded from a browser or a file received via messaging.

This logic aims to simplify usage, but it complicates storage reading. Some applications favor internal memory, others use the SD card if detected, while some directly save a copy to an online space.

As a result, the same file can exist in multiple places without the user being aware.

Internal memory: Android’s preferred place to store your data

Internal memory is the main support used by Android. It hosts the system, applications, and a large part of the files generated daily. Photos, videos, documents, and application data are mostly stored there by default.

This memory is faster than the SD card, which explains this choice. However, it is limited. On 64 GB phones, a part is already occupied upon purchase. According to Samsung, the system and pre-installed applications can use up to 20 GB on some models.

When internal memory approaches saturation, Android slows down certain operations, especially updates and local backups.

SD card: what it actually hosts and what it refuses

The SD card is often perceived as a simple extension of memory. In reality, its use heavily depends on settings and applications. Some accept storing photos and videos there, others completely refuse.

Since Android 10, access to the SD card is more regulated. Applications can no longer write freely without explicit permission. This means some files must remain in internal memory, even if an SD card is available.

According to SanDisk, only 40% of Android users actually use their SD card for personal file storage, with the rest using it only as passive space.

Why do some files never go to the SD card?

Data related to applications are almost always stored in internal memory. This includes settings, caches, and temporary files. Even if an application is partially moved to the SD card, a large part remains internal.

The reasons are related to stability and security. The SD card can be removed, damaged, or replaced, which would cause problems if critical data were stored there.

Thus, photos, videos, and documents can be moved, but application data remain mostly internal.

Cloud: why do some files seem to exist without being on your phone?

The cloud adds an additional layer to this distribution. Google Photos, Google Drive, or other services automatically sync certain files without necessarily storing them locally.

A photo may appear in the gallery even though it is no longer physically present on the phone. It exists only online, with a local thumbnail. This situation is common when the space-saving option is enabled.

According to Google, more than 70% of Google Photos users use automatic synchronization without always knowing its effects on local storage.

What really happens when you download a file

When downloading, Android chooses the location based on the application used. A browser generally saves files in the Downloads folder of internal memory. A messaging app may create its own folder, sometimes hidden.

Audio, video, or image files are then indexed by the system, making them visible in certain applications even if they are stored elsewhere.

This indexing gives the impression that a file is everywhere at once, even though it exists in only one place.

Why do you see files without being able to find them?

Some applications display files via internal shortcuts. They do not show the real location, but a logical copy accessible only from the application.

This particularly concerns messaging and online storage tools. A document may be viewable without appearing in a traditional file manager.

According to Statista, nearly 55% of Android users have already searched for a file visible in an application without being able to locate it in storage.
